mandrake 8.1 rpm installer problems

hi i installed mandrake 8.1 yesterday on my cyrix 266, 64mb ram, s3 trio 3d/2x agp. 2 gig hd, no internet, 1cdrw, 1 cdrom. its fast enough to work with(only tried mp3 and text editor) but some processes like loading browser take up to 20 secs or so. would adding ram help or is the processor more the 'bottleneck'?

my main problem is installing packages. i need a c compiler (not yet c++ needed) for my vi editor exercises for school. i only installed disc 1 with a few options at first because of the small hd. when i try to install the disc 2 gcc3.0 mdk.rpm package(right click software installer)
the dependencies tell me to also install some other packages, i select them too, and it says wait while installing. then my second cdrom opens up and a message asking please insert cd1.
i do this press ok, but it keeps on reopening and asking for disc 1.
install doesnt work. can anyone please help me out here, i really need this urgently for school.
many thanks in advance

Hi,

Yes you could definatly use more ram if you want to use the GUI. Linux will load everything it can into memory.

As far as your install problem, try opening a console, su to root, then type kpackage. I think it should be installed. If not at the root CLI type "urpmi packagename.rpm" (no quotes). This will run the software manager without the GUI, which can be a pain in the backside once in a while. It will try to solve the dependences also.

For more info about urpmi check here,

Hope this helps,

OOPS!

Hi,

I run a swap equal to the amount of ram I have installed. 128megs. That is the general rule of thumb. If you have lots of ram (say, 512megs+), then maybe you could cut it back some. But seeing as you are all ready a bit short, I'd set it at atleast 64megs if not a little more if it's running out.

Are you getting errors about not enough swap space?

i believe its about 200 mb i let mandrake installer partition itself
its about 1 gig for installation files and a 700 and someting mb home partition. is this good?
sorry for the long time to reply my internet connection was down yesterday
it seems like its mostly the loading of browser, .. that takes longer but its probably not abnormal thinking of the age of the pc
im gonna get me more ram and a second hand hd asap.
thanks for all the help
