Install insanity!! HELP Please!!
Hi - Thanks for checking this out. I posted a few days ago before I had tried a few solutions to this problem, with little response, but now the problem is more interesting so I'm trying again. I am new to linux and want to run it so bad, but am getting DENIED..
I tried to install RedHat 8.0 on 2 machines linked by USB KVM. The install went flawlessly on my 500mhz Dell, using burned and confirmed ISOs. On my custom machine (Athlon XP 2000+, ASUS A7V333 MoBo, MSI Geforce 4 MX440 video, 512 mb RAM), the install gets to the boot prompt, I hit enter, a bunch of command lines fly by IDing devices, then the next screen that asks to "Select OK to test media or SKIP to begin install" freezes every time... I tried: boot: "noapic", "linux mediacheck", "text"... all these commands take me to that next screen, where it freezes before have the option to choose OK or SKIP... Changing the boot CDROM from my TDK CDR to my Toshiba DVD. Same hang... I thought my Geforce4 video card might be incompatible since it wasn't on the Hardware Compatibility list, so I swapped the card from my Dell, a TNT2 32mb, and it froze in the exact same spot... I disconnected all unnecessary USB controllers, NICS, etc and still froze in the same spot... now get this: I just tried MANDRAKE 9 thinking that it was RedHat. The first screen comes up with the boot prompt, i begin the install, a bunch of devices are ID'd successfully, then, guess what? Yep, the next screen freezes. Exactly the same spot during install of RedHat, except this screen begins with language choice or something like that. I also tried text install of Mandrake, and it still freezes right after the install begins... Help Please!! I might think the USB keyboard and mouse could cause this, but the install program always gets past the boot prompt and they are ID'd there, plus, it was the same setup that installed successfully on my Dell. Any suggestions are much appreciated... |

Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk and run a thorough scandisk. Your HDD may be bad.

Scandisk returned good results, but it still locked. I have also tried nodma at the command prompt...
Please keep the suggestions coming. Thx... |

try putting a different harddrive in there, see if it hangs in the same spot... the fact that it freezes when you test the media points to the harddrive as prime suspect. Maybe try deleting the partitions and partitioning over again. It doens't like something about that media.

Make sure your IDE devices are all jumpered as "master" or ''slave" as attempting to use cable-select can cause this.

OK guys I'll try that tonight. I think I am using cable-select. Thanks...
I got another stick of RAM, and it still hung in the same spot. I got a return policy on it though, so I'll go trade it in on a new HD if I need to. Chris |
