Hi Hpro:
Your solaris CD shouldve been bootable, its actually the first CD. Anyhoo, to deal with the diskette files (those are meant for 3.5" floppies), using DOS, you need to use the dd.exe utility. You can get the dd.exe util from : ftp://ftp.uu.net/vendor/sun/solaris/x86/dd.exe or you can find it on your favorite FTP search.
The DOS syntax to create the boot disk is:
dd.exe filenameyoudownloaded a:

of course that assumes you've inserted a floppy in your A:

Sorry I didnt explain it before .. hope it works out well for u.

I followed the link - downloaded 4 files named S80 ****.3 suppose those one are the files for Solaris - downloaded the DD.exe made the floppies - but there is still no boot - So I don't know what to expect - how can I install Solaris if I can't boot to the installation files..
any help is very very appreciated - thanks for all input - just to bad that Wickedlittleslaveboy (The Geek)had been prohibited from the forums - he's one of the best.!

Thanks Statica for the new link -

Still - I can't believe it that there is no or only little documentation on how to install Solaris 8.0 -
Now I made the disks again - and then I disabled all the other drives which I don't like to use - and booted of the floppy - and there I saw only in the left corner
Solaris Boot Sector and in the right corner Version 1 and then on the secone screen line a blinking cursor -

and then the light on the floppy went off and the hard drive light from the drive as well - the CDROM kept spinning and that was it for about 5 minutes nothing more nothing less - do I miss something - usually I'm not that stupid - I downloade this files - from Solaris , are those the right Files I mean the OS>!!!

is this the OPERATING SYSTEM or not ??

Software Companion Intel Platform Edition (436.11 MB) was downloaded completely at 10/14/02 11:40 AM.
Thanks a lot
Hpro
EDIT
After I wrote this post above - I created a new floppy - in every means of the word NEW with the file downloaded from the Sun site - above - and still the same - Solaris Boot Sector Version 1.0

May it is because I don't have a solaris installation there -
one more thing is - I don't wonder that BILL GATES get's rich and is driving MICROSOFT on the highway while other OS developers are running on the drive way -
I'm sure not a stupid guy and if stupid - then not so much that I can't get something to work - but like here - they want to sell a OS but but they don't DARE TO MAKE IT good and EASY - with Easy making at least the boot disk that they WORK>!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hpro (Very upset)

Another flop -

Just to make sure that the CD I burned is OK I downloaded the OS again from the Sun website and burned it - tried to boot but still the same - NO GO. and they say that the CD is bootable -

couple days ago I downloaded the new QNX Neutrino OS - burned it and installed it - installaton takes not more than 10 minutes and it is COMPLETELY CONFIGURED< Chris Hess

Re: Statica

By the way, WLSB, was extremely knowledgeable, but he hadnt been prohibited from the forums, he decided to quit of his own accord.
Incidentally, I've seen him around the forums a few times.

Anyway thank - wrote a mail to WSLB - he just answered me - about the same time as he is a very close friend of mine - since my days back on Yahoo... boards..

Thanks
Hpro
EDIT
Now I have downloadet Fireburner - and I will burn the CD - on Win98 - it doesn't work on Win2K - thinking that may 2K makes the problems - anyway I'm surprised as otherwise I can burn almost everything on Win2K.
Will let you know - I cleaned my private message box out -

shutdown does an init 0 (specifically you could issue- /usr/sbin/shutdown -i0 -g0 -y )
reboot works as well or spefically you could issue /usr/sbin/shutdown -i6

am confused .. it didnt shut down or it hung?

Neither - first when I typed Shutdown then it told me that it would shutdown within 1 minute only to to tell me afterwards that it couldn't shut down - and then changed to Init 6 or something like that - automatically - so I thought of other words which may would be possible to bring the sistem down - and the one which works best is to logout to command line and there to use HALT command - which of course will halt the system CLEAN and of course will reboot after ANY KEY had been pressed (if I only could find ANY KEY ) on my keyboard LOL
Thanks Statice - it's a real great OS Solaris - this from a old man...
