Hello,
I have installed Red Hat Linux 7.3 on my second physical drive with XP on my C: drive. I cannot figure out how to get my netwotk card to work for my local network (to my laptop runing Win 98). Aslo when I do a hardware scan it ways I have no modem and when I try to play an audio CD I get no sound yet the minutes advance on the player and do get Gnome sounds in that mode. All this works on the XP side of the house. I love RH Linux 7.3 so far...great interface. By the way, my network card fails the test on boot up yet my network lights are on on both ends. Ok, so the lights are on and nobody's home. I know. ![]() Ithought I better say it before you did. Any help on getting more than the mouse and monitor working would be appreciated. I did get the floppy working and the printer sort of.. Jim |

Hi,
What network card and what soundcard do you have? If you're interested in filesharing take a look at Samba. HTH |

Floppyman,
My network card is a Realtek RTL8139. I found a Linux driver with a make file but when I go to Linux and issue the make -f makefile command to make 8139too.o it says there are a couple files it cannot find that are apparently refenced. One is timex.something. As for the sound card it is built in to my ASUS P4B533 mobo and is called a C-Media CMI8738/C3DX PCI PCI. My mmodem says Generic 56K HCF and is an Aceex. The CD is a Lite-on LTR-40125S I think I need to find and install drivers for all this. It seems Linux would have drivers that work with some. I do not know how to find the dirvers nor install them. What a day to learn!! |

Hi again,
For Samba check out www.samba.org., you may also be able to find a guide on how to install/configure it at www.linuxnewbie.org, I'm not quite sure. I really can't give you anymore advice since I really haven't tried it yet either. Also for your network card, did mention anything in the README file that came with the drivers that had to be installed (e.g. the kernel source), so you could install the drivers? HTH just means "Hope this helps". HTH

OK, I found the Linux driver at the site above and installed it but I find that my modem's IRQ in Win Xp is 21 and over in RH linux it appears I can only go to 15. It is at IRQ 9 now along with at least four other devices. I tried to change it using the command below:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16450 port 0xb000 irq 21 but I had to leave off the irq or change it to a number 1-15 otherwise I get invalid value. Is it normally this hard to get a modem set up in Linux? |

When I run cat /proc/pci my modem entry has the following
Bus 2 device 13 function 0 Conexant HCF 56K Data Fax Voice DRQ 9 0xb000 When I run setserial -bg /dev/ttyS* I get ttyS0 at 0x03f8 irq=4 is a 16550A ttyS1 at 0x02f8 irq=3 is a 16550A . . ttySHCF at 0x0001 irq=0 is a undefined I was able to fine a driver for my Covexant modem chipset in my internal Aceex modem for my Red Hat Linux kernel v 2.4.18-3 and used rpm and it gave a message that it installed fine. The modem even went Active once in the Network Configuration screen but would not dial. I tried as root also. I have spent many hours on this and it just should not be this hard to get one tiny little modem to dial. Please help. |

Hi James,
I'm afraid your problem is beyond the scope of my knowledge (I'm a linux newbie myself). If no one can help you here, try posting over on the forums at www.linuxnewbie.org, if you haven't done so already. Sorry I couldn't help you further, but hope this helps. |

J.M.
Don't feel too bad. If I have it correct, think that's a Rockwell WinModem. Winmodem support isn't real wonderful, as yet. Myself, I went with an external serial (controller) modem, as they usually are real easy to configure. If a few of the makers of proprietary hardware would stop to consider that there is a world beyond M$, maybe they would contribute to the developement of 'other' OS support.
