I'm gonna do it!

I'm going to build a new system, and have 40 gigs for xp home and 40 gigs for a linux OS. I can't decide between RH or Mandrake, though, and I'm not sure whether to download or buy packages (What's the difference? Can't I just download programs like Staroffice and XMMS?). Can somebody help me out? I've obviously never done this before, so I'm going to need step-by-step.
jeesh... and you thought you'd seen the last of my stupid @$$!

edit: okay, I've found a couple of sites that are helping out, I think I just need help with the initial fdisk partition (can linux support NTFS?)

Mandrake is spiffier.... it is optimized for pentium meaning you will have MUCH faster performance (provided it doesn't crash). mandy always comes with the latest features. If you want to just break in to linux in a nice easy, lazy fashion, go mandy.

Linux will support NTFS, but only READ ONLY and that is somewhat experimental.

I don't have a pentium, I have an athlon xp...
I've heard about that. Should I use FAT32 on the same HD, get a different HD, or what?

Just Installed the new SUSE 8.1 this weekend, very cool, recognized everything and was a true 3 click installation.

athlon's can be thought of as AMD pentiums. Same instruction sets (except for SSE2 but almost no *nix cares).

I would install XP on NTFS and create another partition of FAT32 that could act as a My briefcase for both OS's

I'm gonna use FDisk

15GB for XP (NTFS)
30GB FAT32

Let Linux partition this
30GB REISERFS or ext3
5GB free for multiple purposes

just went out and bought SuSE 8.1 personal and planning to learn
