Hi ZANEY123,
Only the first 3CDs of redhat are required, after downloading ISOs and burning them (you need a CD burner, and Nero can be used), you need to set your BIOS to boot from CD ROM, put your first CD, the installation process isn't that complicated, only creating correct partitions maybe a bit difficult, you need some un-partitioned space on your hard disk, create 1 ext3 partition (set the mount point to / ), and 1 swap partition. After installation, you need some info to start using Linux, here is where I started: http://www.linuxdot.org/nlm/ Last edited by aym; 10-20-2002 at 06:11 AM. |

Good Morning,
You can download it if you have a fast connection, but if you are using a dialup and don't want to download it, I have the CDs here if you want them. Just the cost of shipping...it is Redhat 8.0. |

Hi Zaney123,
The easiest distros' to try to transition to from Windows are generally considered to be Mandrake, RedHat, and SuSe (though SuSe only has a limited download version). All three are user friendly to install and have decent GUI's to use for configuration. Mandrake and RedHat both have new releases just out. I use and recommend Mandrake, but, except for some minor niggling differences they are essentally the same. Try one and when you find one you like, buy a copy to support the distro. OOPS!

I am downloading Mandrake right now.
tell you what though even with the cable I have only downloaded disc 2/3 in the past 2 hours and the disc 1 is only 10% down that sucks! ..as far as specs wise what are the necc specs do run these OS's ? Zaney123 edit: I just tryed to DL again and now it is going 65 kbs and the one i have been DL is only 4.5 kbs. so of course i canccled the first one and will have it all done in a hour ..that's alot better!!

Zaney,
Mandrake is optimized for the i586 (Pentium class) RedHat is i386, I'm not sure about SuSe, I think they are i386 also. So if your boxen was made in say, the last 4 years, don't worry too much about running Mandy. I'm running Mandrake 8.0 on a AMD k6-2 350 and a P200 both with 128meg of ram. The K6 is faster than the P200 with KDE or Gnome, but with a lighter desktop, the P200, (say Ice or WM, or XFce), isn't any slower. The more ram the better. Linux will load as much into ram as possible. But when a process is terminated or program closed it is cleaned out of ram totally. Personally, I recommend at least 128meg. OOPS! |
