Which way is the frontier

I have been running Mandrake 8.1 on my personal computer for sometime now. It is running just fine. No complaints.

Well maybe just one--it is running like a top.

I am getting to the point that I only go to my computer when I need to do some work, or surf the web.

This Linux thing is too easy. With Linux becoming so easy to install, and to use, I don't see where it provides a real challenge for the hobby user. It is getting pretty mainstream.

I need to break something, or try something new. Where is the frontier?

Linux just kinda bites that way don't it . All I can recommend is maybe try to learn to program some, Upgrade your desktop to, say, KDE 3.xx, compile a new 2.5.x kernel (testing). Or maybe try a different distro (checkout Gentoo or LFS).

But yeah, Linux can be boring.

I know... Let's experiment with different hardware. Then let's see... to promote community .....Maybe everytime we do an install, or major hardware configuration change, we could call Tux and advise him of what we just did, and get his blessings...

I have already played a litte with python, html and perl. I suspect I could use them, if I had the need. I was thinking about upgrading the desktop to KDE 3 or maybe just upgrading the whole thing to the latest version of SuSe or Redhat, and FreeBSD sounds interesting, but the problem with that is I am really getting a lot of great use out of my computer just about now. Guess it's time to build another little PC to use for upgrades and experiments.

I'd suggest start picking up packages and seeing if you can configure them right .. not just to try the OS but to see the power. Check out stuff like webmin
