Compiling programs in RH8

Can someone tell me how to compile programs in Linux? Actually what I am trying to do right now is add a skin to Xmmms, but the readme says I have to compile it first. How?

Also, I have updated the RH8 kernel twice since installing. When the boot loader screen comes up I have three RH8 options now, one for each version of RH8 I guess. How do I get rid of the older ones and/or remove them from the grub menu?

Thanks.

Compile skin? which skin did you download that needs compiling? Here's the skin installation howto (section 2.3) http://www.xmms.org/documentation.html

Ok thanks Statica, this is what I found:

"2.3 Skin Installation
---------------------

XMMS will create a drawer called ~/.xmms/Skins/ in which you just unarchive the skins the same way as you do for WinAmp.

However, you don't need to unarchive them since XMMS supports archived skins. XMMS currently reads the following formats: zip, wsz, tar, tar.gz and tar.bz2"

But how do I get to the Xmms directory, or drawer as I guess it's called in Linux? It doesn't seem to be as easy to navigate to as what I am used to.

Thanks.

All I did was extract or copy files over to the
/usr/share/xmms/Skins folder , that should do it for you

With redhat just goto home folder and then up until you find /usr and go from there.

From experience, xmms looks in both the /usr/share/xmms/Skins directory and in the user's HOME (~/.xmms/Skins/ ) directory. When you look at the list of skins within xmms, you are seeing the results of both directories.

Do I have to change something somewhere to let me copy/move files to the /usr/share/xmms/Skins directory? When I try to move or copy, or save a skin to this folder, it says I don't have permission. I am logged in as root.

And should Xmms create the ~/.xmms/Skins directory, because I had to make it myself?

Making the skins dir is fine, I just downloaded a skin to try again and all I did was double click the tar.gz , went up to extract and extracted it to the skins folder. I wasnt logged in as root, so I loged out and in to root and it worked .

So I would try to log in as root again and then try again. or try another skin.
