Can somebody please tell a good ISP to use for connecting from a LINUX box? Everyone I find says you have to use their Windows based software to connect. I know I should be able to jsut set up dial-in to any provider, even if they don't actually support LINUX, as long as I know their phone number and required server information for DNS and mail, but...
I tried that with MSN and tought I had it for good, well a couple nights ago when I tried to access the internet, I couldn't resolve any host names. A tech support rep for MSN had told me a while back that they used DHCP to assign their DNS server IPs and I guess they are forced down to your machine when you login, I don't understand why they'd want to do that, but I guess he was right.
ANYWAY... the only thing I can think of to find a new provider would be to surf to each ISP home page and email their tech support folks and ask if they use static or dynamic IP addresses for their servers.
SO if you know of a nation-wide ISP (USA that is) that I can use to connect to from a LINUX box, please let me know.
Thanks

If you have KDE you can use kppp to connect to the internet fairly easily.Just enter your local dial-up number, authentication method(usually PAP)check your dynamic IP address, enter your dns adresses assigned by your isp.I use kppp to logon to the internet using Earthlink.Contact your isp to get information and dns addresses and also read the kppp handbook which is a how-to doc.HTH

p.s. you dont have to use KDE to use kppp, you just have to have KDE installed I believe.

You might want to verify this with them, but I would think Earthlink should be fine. In general, any ISP that you can connect to with Windoze DUN should work fine in Linux.

The only thing you "may" have to do is figure out their logon process if it isn't standard. I could be wrong but I wanna say that Earthlink has a weird way of identifying your username, something like an el or elink in front of it, but they should be able to tell you that.

In any case, an attempt to connect in debug mode should tell you all you need to know if it doesn't work out of the box.
