Mandrake - Which kind though?
Hi,
www.mandrakestore.com I'm there and I'm looking through, but do I get the standard edition at 30 USD or the PowerPack Edition at 69 USD ??? With a view to be programming soon... Thanks Jim

What's the difference between the two? It just seems that the only difference is the support, plus the more expensive version comes with a few extra things that you won't need to download.

As for the manual, I have found that the manuals on the Mandrake site are fine. They are also included on the CDs. Ir you need more, go to a used book store and buy yourself a book on Linux. I got Mandrake 9.0 from www.cheapbytes.com for around $10. It had all I really needed; anything it doesn't have I can just download. |

Hi,
I think you will get the c++ compiler with the standard edition. The Power Pack has a longer support period. Plus it comes with some commercial software, e.g. StarOffice 6.0. I pre-ordered the Power Pack ( I have dialup so I hate DL'ing software ) and all I got were the disks. No manual. No biggie for me, but two months later Mandrake sent me another PowerPack. I don't know why. I've sent them an e-mail to see if I can send them back and get a manual instead ( since I payed for it, kind of a principle thing ). Mandrake has been having difficulties with shipping orders. So I'd probably buy it over the counter if I could, to be sure that you got everything you payed for. HTH, OOPS!

The 3cd version (the downloadable) has everything you need to get into programming (incl. c++ compiler + "development suites"), just make sure you select "Development" in package selection.

Thanks
Got it completely sorted now. (Bought it from eBay in the end - simply because it shipped from the UK to the UK) I'll let you know if I have any more problems
