Mandrake install prob

Got 3CDs here, Mandrake Installation CD1,2 and 3. No others

Trying to install Mandrake has been a disaster thus far

It seems to install OK, apart from at certain points. i.e when installing a printer it says installation of package printer-testpages-1.0-76mdk.i586 failed, continue anyway?

Little bit later it says ERROR: mkinitrd failed

Later on (during last bit of install there are a few errors relating to these packages and more...)
scli-0.2.9-2mdk.i586
printer-utils-1.0-76mdk.i586
nmap-3.00-1mdk.i586
also one about gimp i believe, and more

This is only a test install on a 1 gig HDD for the moment (stupid I know) Is this the problem? Is there simply not enough space to install these last few packages?

It's just a test until my 80GB HDD arrives

Thanks

Jim

mandy should let you know the size of your install in the package selection. This does sound like a size thing. What are you installing? How did you partition? How much are you installing? If you wanted to test, you would ideally want a minimal install with X and maybe a desktop and NOTHING else.

OK sorted it now thanks, made the '/' partition bigger and tried the same install. Worked fine

So it was a size problem, I'll let you know once the new HDD arrives and it's all working perfectly

you should make a /usr partition, that's where the installed progs go. As for the / partition, it can be very small as long as you have separate /var and /usr partitions. (/var is for logging)

Thanks for the info, however, making the / partition bigger for some reason worked.

This is the sort of thing I need to know though to be able to get to grips with Linux

Can you recommend any good books to get?

Thanks

it probably has to do with your /boot (where your initrd, kernel, and boot manager go) and a few other top level folders like /bin ( where a few essential executables go). For future reference, I always make my root partition at least 256MB- it is usually enough. I have never had to go above 512MB. As for books... well can't reccomend any but some great websites are listed in the "linux links" post.

I purchased (The Complete Idiot's Guide to Linux) by Manuel A.
Ricart from Amazon. He makes it as simple as I think it can be.
