I'm having problems with a fresh install of RedHat 6.2 on my new Duron system. Here's the hardware:
MSI mobo
Duron 600
256 MB PC133 RAM
WD 15 GB HD
GeForce DDR
SBLive

Linux seems to install beautifully, and then on restart, it tries to Disable CPUID Serial Number, and then says General Protection Fault... Then a long string of debugging stuff, then:
Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In swapper task - not syncing
then it stalls permanently. I thought at first it was a problem with my install-time configuration, but then I reinstalled with a vanilla workstation install, and got the same thing, which leads me toward a hardware problem or incompatibility for which I didn't account. Is there some problem with Durons? If so, how do I get around it? Any ideas?

Actually, I found a fix for it. Turns out the problem was that the kernel tried to disable the Duron's processor ID number... which it doesn't have. So, the fix is to give it a compile-time parameter when installing that says:
x86_serial_nr=1
which disables that particular bit of Linux goodness. Alternately, you could do it at boot time by putting:
linux x86_serial_nr=1 at the lilo prompt.
Thanks anyway!
