I've just installed Red Hat 8. Everything went well. Everything was detected. Printer works, internet connection, e-mail and even my digital camera is seen by RH. Everything is great so far except the GNOME CD Player. No sound. All the other sounds are there. It just wont play music. I've checked the volume for ther CD player and it's on (not muted) and all the way up.
I'm at a loss. Is this a bug. Can I somehow reinstall the CD player? When I put a music CD in, it auto picks up and looks like it's playing. It even displays the CD title and track titles.(which I didn't put in) I'm using removable hard drives. I'm going back and forth between Windows and Linux. Music CD's play in windows from the same CD drive. Thanks. I'm at a loss..... |

Hi, I don't think that the cdplayer is where the problem is. I have the same (or similar problem) with all linux distros. One thing that I noticed is the volume control only shows one speaker. Those same distros play cd sound normally on my sons computer.
I'm leaning toward a sound card not getting the proper driver and since I have that and video integrated into the MB, I think I'll let it go for now. |

Most all Linux distros require that the audio jumper wire be installed between the cd drive and the sound card (or motherboard cd sound input if not separate card). Many boxes built for Win, use a digital input, and don't require it. Somebody could have saved a few cents when they built the box, it's worth a look see
Haven't run into the 'only 1 sound channel' thing, however. I haven't had the best of luck with boards using AC 97 audio, personally.

My puter is set as dual boot with w2k at this time and mine also plays normally in w2k. I have noticed that if I crank up the volume in linux, I can get some sound from the cd. It's static and sounds terrible.
The cd sound cable is installed. |

The wire betwen the CD Rom and Sound Card is installed and working when windows is running. In RedHat, I get full volume sound on everything except music CD's. Could that be a driver problem? I wouldn't think so but I don't know to much about Linux.
Windows plays musicCD's Linux dosen't Same box. I've got to be missing something here. Thanks for the replies...

Well, I decided to do abit of troubleshooting. I know that sound is normal for everything but the cdrom, but I checked the setting anyhow.
In Control Center, there are a bunch of settings which had no affect on it. Next, I went to the true command prompt by pressing Cnt + Alt + F1 ( sort of like rebooting to dos mode in Windows). From there I ran the sndconfig utility. Everything was ok there and I got to hear Linus as a final test. That leaves the cdrom device which you suggested to begin with. ![]() The different cdrom device works like a charm! Shows you how much I play cdroms. If you have another device laying around, you may want to try it. |

I also have a 2nd cdrom(burner) in the computer. CD"s won't play from there either. All cables are hooked up. I've gotta be missing something.

On my computer, there are two cdrom devices from the same manufacturer. They both have bad sound quality.
I used a new cdrom device from another machine to get results. |

OK, the burner has a head phone jack. I put a music CD in the burner, it auto picks up. I plug in the head phones and I hear music. I know this points to the cable not being hooked up but it is and it works in windows.
Any ideas? Still nothing out of the computer speakers. only the head phones. A new CD ROM might be in my future but I'm still not sure it will fix the problem. |
