Setting Up a File Server with Linux

Recently I got a IBM PC 325 duel pentium 200mhz file server in a giveaway that has Linux on it. I know absolutely nothing about file servers and Linux. Could someone tell me how I should go about connecting my PC and Mac to the file server or should I just dump Linux and use Windows NT4 which I might be more comfortable with since it is probably closer to Win98 which I use. When I start up the file server with Linux, it goes through a lot of stuff for like 2 minutes and then gives an error message and freezes. I suppose that might be because nothing is connected to it.

There is a software suite called SAMBA that uses NetBIOS to network with Windows. It can act as a PDC. More information is available at www.samba.org, and more info at www.linuxquestions.org, in their forums.
