Ouch! Linux doesn't know what kind of hardware it is talking to, and is assuming the worst.... That the hardware won't support normal screen resolutions (even 640 x 480) This kind of stuff happened often in ISA video card installs. There is usually a text menu configuration program in most of these installs... The linux command shell bash has sort of an auto complete. You're looking for a file called something like Xf86config, xf86config, or similar... So type Xf and hit the tab key, and it will try to autocomplete the available commands. Since Unix/Linux is case sensitive, you may have to try a few variations. If you just type x or X and hit tab, there will be ALL the choices available, and will probably scroll past the bottom of your text shell. Anyhow, in order to use the configurator, you have to know what your video card is and what the monitor supports for horizontal and vertical frequencies. (Easy to get if you still have their manuals...) Hope this helps

You can try to configure things manually with the command xf86config. You need to know the make and model of your video card and monitor. On the card, you can use generic vga but it's going to look like crap. On the monitor, you can just put in the horizontal and vertical settings if you have them
