Go to the web-site and see if it supports your graphics card.

A TNT2 is supported.

It's been a while since I used it but doesn't it allow you to set up the display and video driver during install? If so I think you may have set one of them up incorrectly.

It takes a while to boot up knoppix.
did you wait long enough at the black screen? (takes up to 30 secs or longer on my pc's)
What kind of monitor do you have? i recently tried it on a system with a
gf4mx400 (wich was recognized) but the flat screen monitor wasnt recognized, so it kept on hanging.
how do you boot up , there are problems with some settings, (it always crashes when i try to boot with gnome,....)
maybe try all kinds of different bootup settings. (or none)

Autoconfiguring doesn't mean that is the correct configuration ;-).
As grasshopperbe said, it can take a long time to reach the desktop (lintop? =P). I tried knoppix with : ati 9500, sis < something >, tnt2, 400mx and all of them were autoconf ok.

sounds like the wrong settings in X. You should look at the XF86 log file. Can you post your XF86Config file?
