Red Hat/Proxy
Hey,
I have Red Hat installed as a dual boot with XP. I'm on a network, behind a proxy. In the Proxy section of the Control Centre I've set up the proxy address in the HTTP and HTTPS boxes, so I can browse the web (am using Konqueror right now). The Red Hat update agent, however, and any mail client, can't seem to get past the proxy. Any suggestions? Cheers |

I don't think you have a RedHat problem. I think you have a network problem. Have you talked to the network administrator?

No cause they don't like me - I'm always asking them things. Not only that, but they've never once solved a Windows problem, so I don't see them being able to help me with a Linux one!

I don't think you have a Linux problem. You are able to go on line and cruise the net to your hearts content. What you can't do is get your mail client and redhat's update manager through. I think you are behind a firewall. I think your network administrator might need to make some adjustments to let your mail client and redhat's update manager through.
Sorry you are having so many problems with the administrator. Perhaps if you called and asked him if he had any idea why your mail client and update manager can't get through you might be able to butter him up enough to help. CH |

I would look in the connection settings for windows copy them down and put everything in linux exactly as in windows. Are you sure you don't need to authenticate yourself? Did you put in the right ip addys- that is can you see people on the network (with samba, assuming no one else uses linux)

Hey.
All the IP addy's are right. Used to need to authenticate myself - don't anymore. Still, I could try the old username and password. |

OK, have found the problem, network admin says nothing he can do about it. Will just have to stick to Windows for MSN till I move out!

MSN is your ISP? I wish you had mentioned that in the beginning.

No no, I mean MSN Messenger! I'm on a LAN in my uni halls :P
To use an instant messenger or mail client, I have to have some firewall thing installed so it gets passed the proxy (so says Mr Network Man) - he says that the server here will only support this kind of thing through Windows, and that there was no support for Linux! |

Exactly why must you use Microsoft Windows to get past the firewall? Has he told you?
CH Oh I understand. Microsoft Firewall Client is a layered product that sets on winsock and runs on Windows 9x etc. I still don't know why that is the only way around the firewall. CH Last edited by Computer Hobbyist; 03-04-2003 at 09:38 PM. |

I know, its pretty annoying, Weird cause i can browse the web without it, but if its not installed then email clients can't find mail servers and stuff - well, that's what happens in Windows, so I'm assuming that's why the Linux mail clients can't connect to servers!

Here's another one.... :P
In Windows, I only need to give one proxy address and port number, and everything works - http, https, ftp etc. In linux, there's a box for each protocol - I've entered the same for each one, but can't access ftp or https sites. Any ideas?
