Lycoris Desktop/LX - Kppp/pppd question(s)
Howdy
I have just installed Lycoris desktop/lx which was about the smoothest install for a Linux distro I have yet seen. Comes with Samba SMB/CIFS file/print sharing enabled and ready to go ( firewall as well). There were some install issues which I list at the end after my kppp/pppd question. So far I have not been able to get my dialup net connection going because of seeming authentication problems. I have a kppp account and my modem seems to be working ( /dev/ttys2 ). Not sure whether I should be using PAP or CHAP ( my ISP account is working fine from Windows ). I don't need scripts. With terminal based authentication everything appears to be working from connect, userid/password authentication through to running ppp at the ISP end which hands down a dynamic IP and waits. Nomatter what authentication approach I use, the pppd daemon dies with the following logged messages : pppd 3607 By default remote system is required to authenticate itself because this system has a default route to the net couldn't find any suitable secret passwords for it to use to do so None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address. My account is set for dynamic IP and default gateway using the default route. I have tried not using a default route ( doesn't sound right). In windows the default gateway is the DHCP IP assigned at connection. What is the relevance of autoconfig of hostname from IP in kppp ( probably not relevant ) ? It seems that kppp is authenticating itself to my ISP but my ISP needs to authenticate itself to pppd ??? If this is so, how does this happen ? Any help on this one appreciated. Other install Issues : - Lycoris install is pretty smooth. Copies packages in background while you finish up your question entries. Detected my video and let me set 800x600 right up. I had to battle with other distros to get 800x600 ( X server/xfree ). - Have Canon S400SP and specified S400 on install but no printer installed. - AW37 Sound card producing ( CS4232 set by Lycoris ) PCM tones but no CD playback despite setting volume controls. - Restore Floppy not written until post install processing completes. - When the system comes up/down these messages display : modprobe - can't locate module block - major - 33 and 34 Other than that the install went OK. Works OK with sharing on my LAN. Now I just want to get on the net. Any help appreciated. Thanks Web Gecko |

Hey TMAN !
Australian ISP, Up n Away ( upnaway.com ) . We use tone dialing
and US is pulse ( I think ). Not sure whether dialling was involved but I have since found a solution. I have Red Hat 6.2 and 7.0, Mandrake and Turbo Linux. Have mainly spent time on Red Hat and initially had plenty of problems although RH 7.0 wasn't too hard to get the net connection going though. Lycoris has Rockwell winmodem drivers which worked fine right up. I am still trying to get my sound and printer working though. The windows ( Samba SMB/CIFS ) file sharing works fine. Solution to Kppp/pppd problem Generally this ain't a problem in other distros as pppd version and config delivered may be different. BUT pppd may be configured with the "auth" option by default. This causes pppd to expect your ISPs ppp to reverse authenticate with pppd after pppd has finished authenticating itself to your ISP ( uses PAP/CHAP secrets file [ ppp may pass back known secrets like userid/password or other secrets set up in advance] don't have the detail here) before pppd will accept an IP and continue. Two approaches : Note : noauth option for pppd can only be used in root account 1. In root account, enter noauth option in Kppp account setup and pppd arguments. Connect/login via Kppp. 2. In root account either : a. Comment out auth option in /etc/ppp/options with # character. or b. Add noauth option to /etc/ppp/options if auth option not present. Connect/login via Kppp in normal user account. Got this info from : http://devel-home.kde.org/~kppp/faq.html This seems to work OK. If pppd dies again and Kppp mentions debug, just OK debug and try again. Seems to work now. Onto my other issues. cheers Web Gecko |
