I was browsing a cd I got from the Nospin Group which contained a bunch of assorted packages, which I think caused somthing interesting to happen:
I usually look over the contents of Linux cds using kfm.But this time I went into kde's disk navigator and clicked cdrom and looked at the files that way.I finished looking around and ejected the disc and shut down the computer for the night. The next morning when I booted up Linux and got to the desktop, the cd-rom activity light came on and started blinking. I couldnt open App Starter or anything else in the panel.I could click icons but they did nothing.I clicked cdrom and got a kfm window which was blank.I closed it and an "open with" dialog box appeared.I pressed cancel and the cd-rom stopped running and everything went back to normal. But every time I rebooted the same thing would happen. This only happened in one of the 3 accounts I have on this machine,so,as root, I archived the user settings and deleted the account and then rebuilt it manually. It fixed the problem but there must be a good reason for this to happen and Im sure there is a better solution to this problem than the one I used. BTW, the account in question was new and nothing that important was lost.Sure would like to find out what I screwed up.

I don't know what packages you looked, but it sounds like a virus to me. Good thing you were not running the stuff as root, though. :-)

I would suggest that Linux didn`t "unmount" the CD. Insert the CD and see if you still have these problems. If all work OK, manually unmount the CD and retry.

If Linux didn't unmount the CD, the CD would not even eject. :-) However, if that's the case, you could do a umount -f (name of mount point), and a few tries of that should take of it. :-)
