failed dependencies

Hi all

I am new to linux so please excuse me if this is a stupid question. I have tried to install the firewall firestarter and got this error message(I am using mandrake 9)
error: failed dependencies:
libXft.so.2 is needed by firestarter-0.9.1-1mdk
libXrandr.so.2 is needed by firestarter-0.9.1-1mdk
libcrypto.so.0.9.7 is needed by firestarter-0.9.1-1mdk
libfontconfig.so.1 is needed by firestarter-0.9.1-1mdk
libssl.so.0.9.7 is needed by firestarter-0.9.1-1mdk
RESULT=1
What do i need to do now?
thanks DM1

simply go to:
http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/FByName.html > scroll down to the version of firestarter you are attempting to install .. the latest one 0.9.1mdk for example .. click on the link and you should come to http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/ma...2mdk.i586.html

So now you scroll down and see the dependencies list in the Requires section. Well, when you look at that list vs yours .. its pretty easy to see whats missing .. so click on the link .. for example if you want libcrypto.so.0.9.7; click on that link and you will go to the rpm that provides it. Download that rpm; and install it .. once you are done .. install firestarter.

HTH

Hi,

No, it shouldn't do that. At least it doesn't for me. But if it is giving you problems, then an alternative method to use is to add sources via urpmi (basically the equivilant to the almighty apt-get in Debian, except for rpms instead of debs). This will add sources to gurpmi so you can use the graphical installer. Go to thiswebsite http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php

Simply follow the directions and it will generate the correct lines to use with urpmi to add sources to your list. I recommend adding the "main", "contribs", "updates", possibly "unsupported", "plf" and "texstar". This should solve the vast majority of dependency troubles. To apply the script to your system, open a terminal su to root, then simply copy and paste the lines to your terminal, hit enter, and wait for it to finish. Then you can use the software manager to add your new packages.

Most of what you are looking for is in the contribs section.

HTH,
OOPS!

Another great source of information as well as rpm files, is this site. You can enter the filename, or the rpm, that you are looking for along with a distro, or architecture, it will come back with a list of rpm files that contain the library file or will reference each of the various rpm file versions available. Then you either find the appropriate rpm file on your own distro CDs or download the appropriate rpm file.
