Alternative os for old system
Just curious, what os other than a windows system would work well with a P1 100MHZ with 72 Megs of ram. Im wanting to all the playing around I can on this old hand-me-down my father got a hold of. Im aware there isnt much a system with these specs will do and that is why we want to experiment with it.

Well, "other than a Windows system" would be any Linux distro. Mandrake, SuSe and Red Hat are usually recommended for beginners. You can get them at www.linuxiso.org .
You have to pay for the full version of SuSe though, but I would download the live evaluation to see whether you like it and if it works well with your system. Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure any linux os would run fine on your comp. Dswissmiss Last edited by Dswissmiss; 03-14-2003 at 05:52 PM. |

II propably wont go as far as to purchase a full version as this is only a toy. We may want to try Windows 3.1 next week. Does any one know if you can still get Win 3.1 anywhere?

As for "toying" with Win 3.1, you can probably find it at a flea market, or e-bay, or even a forum like this for a very small investment. I'd offer, but I got rid of my Win 3.1 diskettes about a year ago !!

You may be able to run win95 on it.
I had a few 66MHz HP's with 16MB and 32MB RAM running 95 on them and they ran okay.

I just secured a win 95 disk today. I may load it on a hard drive and see how it runs.

maybe here
You could try here, but I'm not sure about the $$$.
Radio Shack Product Support Center at (817)878-6875, 9 AM. to 7 PM. CST, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). Don't know why I did it, but I just bought a Tandy 2500 for $40 from a friend in need of cash. Now I have to figure out what do with it....

mountaineer don't be fooled when somebody says nearly any distro of linux will do. That is true if you want to run from a command line. If you want to run in an xwindow environment, you will have problems and will run slow if at all. Better off installing an os designed for the p100 with 72 meg. Windows 3.1 comes to mind. Maybe Windows 95. Or you can run Linux from the command line and use the machine as some kind of server.

If you can put two NICs in it, you can make a fine firewall or router out of it with linux. It's a good way to get some real use out of ancient hardware and there are minimal linux distros specifically designed for this purpose. I beleive there's a good linux firewall program that runs off a floppy; you don't even need a hard drive.

I just purchased a complete set of 3.1 disks and the original MS manual from e-bay for a total of $16.23 (includes shipping).

Why bother with that when Win 98 will work pretty well on that system?

You must mean the P1 100MHZ with 72 Megs of ram, surely not my Tandy with from 1-4mb?
If W98 will work on the Tandy, I'll just skip the 3.0! I have W98 on my other pc, so I have all the disks for that. Won't install anyway. I have a 1.44mb floppy drive and a 5" floppy drive...no CDrom drive. Last edited by wilder; 08-18-2003 at 05:20 PM. |
