Getting rid of Lilo

I installed a copy of Mandrake Linux...9.0 I believe. After a little bit of use, I decided Linux wasn't for me and formatted the partition to get rid of Mandrake (didn't know of any other way). Now though, I still have Lilo popping up during startup and asking what OS I want to boot. How do I get rid of this? Thanks a lot guys!

It didn't affect mine. It just restores your original master boot record.

Search google under "mandrake uninstall lilo". There's a lot of sites, mostly they give the same advice I did.

If you are running Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can boot up into the recovery console and type FIXBOOT or you can run a repair installation.

I'm running a Sony Vaio laptop and I'm not sure how to boot to DOS with it. I don't have an actual XP setup cd (running Windows XP Home) so I can't boot from that, and I have no floppy drive to use a 98 boot disk. All I've got are the System/Driver/Application recovery cds that came with the computer.. Gosh I feel like such a computer newbie, don't even know how to boot to DOS!

EDIT: I dug up an old 98 setup disk, but the command fdisk /mbr does not do anything. I was able to get into the recovery console, but it asks me for an Administrator password and I never chose a password for this. I just pressed enter to leave it blank, but says it is invalid. Not sure how to get passed this.

You need a startup disk containing the fdisk utility. Did your cd rw come with nero? I think that nero has the ability to create a boot cd.

Try using "admin" as the password. fdisk /mbr won't work in XP.

If admin doesn't work, call the support # and ask them what the password is, but don't tell em you need it to get rid of lilo as they won't support you.

Yep, I have a copy of Nero installed on the machine. I'll try that route and if it still doesn't work I guess I'll have to call tech support. Thanks a lot guys!

Wierd, fixboot was the only thing that worked for me. Mind you, that was with an Me boot disk created in XP, maybe thats why.

Yes, Fixboot fixes the master boot record when LILO is installed and you don't want it anymore. FDISK cannot see Linux Partitions, you may only be able to see it as "Non DOS partition" it's best to run Linux setup, and remove all partitions from there.

One thing to remember is that there are OS-specific versions of fdisk -- it's not generally a universal program, especially with Windows/DOS.

While the Linux version of fdisk can see and can manipulate DOS/Win partitions, to some degree, the Win/DOS version of fdisk cannot recognize Linux filesystems, and therefore cannot manipulate them.
