I am only getting sound when I am logged in as root. Running Redhat 7 if that helps. I cannot seem to find an answer as to why the sound does not work when I log in as another user. I have not tried doing too much as I really don't know what to try.
Thanks

Easiest solution

Do you have a separate group for "audio" in your userconf? If so add the new user to the member list.

No, I do not have a group called audio. When I log in as my other user I am getting a sound/daemaon error. Says it cannot run..or something to that effect and that I should type esd at the command prompt. When I do this it says it is already running..sorry for the simplistic explanation, but duh....newbie time all over again.

ok, first I get an error message:
Cannot connect to sound daemon. The sound daemon can be started by running esd at the command prompt.

When I try this I get the below error.

# esd
esd: Esound sound daemon already running or stale UNIX socket
/tmp/.esd/socket
This socket already exists indicating esd is already running.
Exiting...

keep in mind that the sound works fine when logged in as root but not as another user.

What next?

Ah. That means that you previously loaded ESD, but somehow it crashed, causing the socket to remain. Delete the socket and reload the ESD daemon.

If that does not fix your problem, I would suggest trying to get sound to work without ESD first.
