I thought that I would install Netscape 6 on my Linux box. I downloaded the Netscape installer (Thanks Microsoft). I then uncompressed, went to the install directory and typed in ./netscape-installer. I then recieved the following message Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:. Any ideas on what to do about that. Thanks.

Hi Marving,
What linux are you running? I just downloaded it on my RedHat 6.2. Took 3 trys, server kept timing out on me. The readme in the installer says you need glibc2.1 and libjpeg.so.62 or higher. And that it has only been tested on RedHat 6.0 or better. But should work with Debian2.1 and SuSE6.2. I would think it should run with Mandrake also. They also state that it needs a P233 or faster cpu, and 64meg ram too. Hope this sparks some ideas for you. OOPS!

I meet all of the requirements. I am running Mandrake 7.02. I'll keep playing with it.

Hi Mairving,
I looked up gtk on the gnome website. Sounds like you might have to work a bit harder to get it run with KDE. I haven't used KDE yet, just Gnome. Maybe the version of gtk on KDE is a bit different. This is what Gnome says about gtk: Gtk-- is a C++ wrapper for gtk+. Includes wrappers for all gtk1.2 widgets, most of the gnome ones, and for gdk1.2. Also includes some low level drawing tools. Perhaps you need to download it from Gnome or find the equivalent from KDE? I found it at http://www.gnome.org/applist/list.php3 under Development tools. At any rate it sounds like the problem would be with gtk itself. Hopefully someone with more smarts than me can clarify this. OOPS! |

Well here is the kicker. You have to be using the Gnome desktop instead of the KDE desktop. I loaded up Gnome, clicked the Installer script and in 3 or 4 tries, I had Netscape 6.0 installed. I do hope that it is more staple than the PR releases. I still don't really like the hoops that you are put through but so far so good. Thanks for the help.

Yeah I've thought about playing around with Mozilla. May give it a try. So far though, Netscape 6 has actually shown some stability. I have turned off Java, so that may explain things. I'll keep you updated.

I've been running Netscape 6.0 for a few weeks now. It works okay. Sites that weren't available to 4.7 seem to work okay in 6.0. It has some bugs with bookmarks and if it encounters a problem the browser closes. Overall it works better so far than 4.7. Still not as smooth as IE 5 but getting closer.
