Conexant V.90 56K modem, and the chipset number is "RS56-PCI R6793-15".
My Kernel version is 2.4.21-0.13mdk First thing, is my modem HSF of HCF? I tried the HSF generic Binary RPM here: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/downloads.html, but it didn't work.

Hi,
Google shows it as an HSF. Perhaps you might try to use the tarball. Have you checked this site? http://www.linmodems.org/ They have some good references. Softmodems can be a pain to install in any distro. If all fails you might invest in a hard modem. They definatly work the best. Sorry I can't be of more help. OOPS!

I have the same modem as you, I could not for the life of me get it to work in Mandrake, it seems to have a problem with creating the device in /dev.
Im now running Redhat 9 and it works prefectly. You might want to consider changing distro or get a hard-modem. HTH |

Hmm... I'm not planning on switching over to Red Had for a while yet. Streams, you make it sound pretty bleak for getting my modem to work in Mandrake.
![]() I this: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/...s-mdk-x86.html , but no dice. Any other suggestions? |

Ok,
I'm going to suggest you try it by rebuilding the source rpm. Doing it this way will give you a customized rpm binary for your box. If you haven't compiled from source, it isn't that hard. Plus it's cool .You will need to have the correct gcc C compiler for you version and the kernel source installed. If they arn't installed they are included on your install discs. OOPS! I really should give you the link for source, http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/downloads.html Use the one called Source RPM. Sorry about that! Last edited by OOPS!; 04-19-2003 at 08:51 PM. |

Ouch. Sounds painful.
Does this envolve programming? I don't have any experience with anything else other than some of the web languages. Also, are there any instructions on how to do this? |

Here are the instructions,
METHOD C: TAR PACKAGE (*.tar.gz) If you have obtained the driver package in tar format: 1. extract the package with "tar -xzf hsflinmodem-{version}.tar.gz" 2. change to the package directory with "cd hsflinmodem-{version}" 3. run "make install" from the top of the package directory. (Debian users might need to change the KERNELSRC definition in modules/common.mak first) 4. run "hsfconfig" to complete the installation and configure your modem. (Alternatively to this whole procedure you may generate RPMS from the tar package using rpm -ta hsflinmodem-{version}.tar.gz") |

I'm still a little befuddled, but I'll see if I can wade through it.
Btw, What is the "RPMS" thing? |

Ok,
If you go to that link you will find a file hsflinmodem-5.03.27lnxtbeta03041600-1.src.rpm. Down load that. then open a terminal and su to root. CD to the directory where you downloaded the src.rpm to. type rpm --rebuild filename.src.rpm Hit enter Now you need to find where it went to. So open a file manager and look in usr/src/RPM/RPMS. You will see several folders i386, i486, i586, i686, athlon, and maybe k6, and noarch. Look in each folder to find your recompiled rpm. At this point you can open your favorite GUI and simply install your custom rpm that way, or return to your cli and type: rpm -ivh filename.rpm From what I've been reading, this way works the best for getting these pesky softmodems working with Mandrake. I wish you Luck!!! OOPS! |
