Send a message via AIM to Xayd
ctrl + alt + backspace will stop it if you have it running.

To start it back up, "startx"

I'm assuming you are logging in at the command prompt. If so, type startx and the X server should start. To get out of X, you should just be able to log off and you will be back at the command prompt. Hope this helps.

Edit:

Xayd beat me to it....

I'm not logging in at the command prompt that is the problem it automatically starts X and gives me the login screen there, and I need this to stop this to do an install of some drivers but would like to be able to reset it to start back up this way when I'm done.

If you want to boot to a command line and your using lilo for your boot loader, reboot and hit the Esc button as soon as the lilo screen comes up. This will bring you to a prompt where you can designate boot parameters. At the prompt type:

linux 3

where 'linux' is the label of your linux system that you want to boot into.

Alternatively, boot into X, open a console and su to root. Then run the following:

# init 3

That will shut down X and bring you to a command line login. Both methods cause linux to run at runlevel 3 which is the command line mode, i.e. no X.

Thanks that was exactly what I was looking for.
