Rh 9
Hi all,
Has anybody installed this yet? If so, what are your thoughts/impressions? I'm thinking of installing it this weekend to see what it's like. TIA. |

Yes i have just changed from Mandrake 9 to Redhat 9 and although i am not a Linux expert they look to be similar and i am impresed with Rh9. An IT expert I know recomended I install Rh9, as one of the reasons for getting Linux in the first place was for my son who wants to get into computing and he recomended Rh9.I dont know if you are familiar with Linux if not i would recomend trying it. Rh9 as I already said looks impresive at first glance and have no reason not to recomend it.

Thanks guys. Has anything major changed since the previous versions (8, 7.3 etc.)? Is mp3 support back in by default? Thanks again.

Haven't got RH9 yet, but I read somewhere that MP3 support isn't there yet.

I just got RH9 up and I must say I am impressed. I am not a Linux guy but i have been giving it a whirl. RH 9 is actually useful. It installed without a hitch, it has an update feature that is cool. The GUI is enough like windows so that even I can use it. It makes a great jumping off point for further exploreation

Red Hat is a great company with a real commitment to open source software and they're willing to put their money behind it. I have a tremendous amount of respect for them. All that being said, Rh 9 is marketed and aimed at the corporate desktop by Rh's own admission. They really are not concerned about the home user because they have concluded that at this point there is no money to be made there. As a result, they have poor or nonexistent support for multimedia, mp3 and installation of software not on their CDs. The boss doesn't want the employees fooling around with any of the above for the most part. Rh 9 is very stable and can be tweaked to give most home users what they want but your going to have to do some learning and make no mistake about it, there is a real learning curve with linux, whether it be Rh9 or another linux distro. For the home user, I beleive Mandrake 9.1 is better for multimedia support, sotware installation and GUI(as opposed to command line) configuration utilities because Mandrake is very much more aimed at the home user.
