When I start up Red Hat 7.0, the screen starts flasing. It does it about 5 times then spits out this message:
"According to /var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running(###), but seems to have been murdered mysteriously" (The ### is always a different 3-digit number.) It does that screen flashing and message about 10 times, then spits out a new message: "INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes" Then everything's golden for 5 minutes, and I can do anything. But after 5 minutes, this thing interrupts everything and starts its little jig over. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! I'm going crazy! |

Are you using:
* GUI bootup [initlevel 5] ? if so switch to init 3 [ Edit /etc/inittab and change the initial runlevel from 5 to 3, & reboot.] When it gets back up, login from the console and run startx >& xerrors Your X error messages be logged to the "xerrors" file and hopefully you`ll be able to tell what happened. [if not post errors] * It is fairly documented that this error with Gnome [although not documented at gnome.org!!] .. try KDE & see if the nightmare returns. * There is an old trick .. I dont know your version of Xfree86 nor have I used RedHate 7 [prolly never will go into RedHat unless they seriously do something abt their Micro$oftish attitude], so use at own risk .. - login on single user, as root - run .. /usr/X11R6/bin/Xautoconfig * if it doesnt work .. try posting ur gdm.conf cheers |
