Question Which is easier for setting up a server?

I've been trying to set up Mandrake 9.0 as a server with apache, PHP and MySQL enable, but I'm not making much headway. Would RH8 do this almost automatically?

yep, almost automatically, just install Apache, PHP and MySQL from redhat CDs, then start Apache and MySQL from the services tool, and you're done.
If you have any particular questions about setting up a web server just ask, we'll try to help.

I guess I'll be switching over to RH8, then. I'm really having the dickens of a time trying to configure Mandrake.

What kind of config are you trying to do? Is it just getting PHP to work with Apache? Or are you trying to do something with Apache config?

In the console, I typed in a command which told me that apache was running. So that's okay. Next, I wanted to start setting up a website, by first installing a forum from a single "install.php" file. It is not recognized. So, that's where I'm stuck.

is PHP code interpreted or not?
type 127.0.0.1/install.php in your browser's address bar (change the address to where install.php is) then view the source code, if you find something like <?php then PHP isn't working, otherwise, there maybe something wrong with the script itself or PHP settings.

Well, I created a simple HTML file first, and put it in the /var/www/html folder, and it wasn't accessible. Then I tried the PHP installation file (it's for FUD Forum), and that didn't work either.

So since RH8 is for the purpose of web servers, I think I'll give it a try.

Better use 9, as it will have all the latest security patches, and get the latest php and apache and so on or you may be in for a hijacking. If you use wuftp, make sure it isn't the ver that has a exploit in it that is well known.

I just bought a rather large book at Barnes & Nobles for RH8, since I didn't see any for 9.

Would there be any differences between the 2 versions if I used the book to set up the server? Are RH9's updates only bug fixes and security patches?
