Just did a fresh install of Linux 6.2 with KDE. When I go to log in I can put in user name but when it comes to entering password, the keyboard does nothing except make the cursor blink whenever a key is pushed while the cursor is in the password field. Can't log in. any ideas?

It won't show anything as you are typing your password (not even ******). Just type it in carefully and you should log in.

Also make sure that your numlock key is on. Oh and by the way there is no such thing as Linux 6.2, Redhat Linux 6.2 maybe. Just kidding with you but some people would rip you for that faux pas.

Err.. the password prompt doesnt get masked or echoed ONLY when on console .. are u logging into console mode or into your GUI directly. I recall that RedHate had some issues with the GUI login .. if u cant still log in then the issue is manifest in 6.2 as well. [that is if u arent using SuSE] {Follow Mairving's advice on describing ur Linux to us}.

Try going into console mode init level 3 & logging in.

Cheers

Definately the way to go. If one flavor doesn't work, just try a new one. I am running Mandrake 7.0. I tried to upgrade just for fun to 7.2 but the installation would always stall. Mandrake is a nice distro for the desktop, maybe not as nice as a server. I have always had my best experiences with the recommended installation. Then later you can add features. The only thing that I don't understand is the ordering thing. If you do have to order/buy it, use someone like Cheapbytes who just downloads and burns. Good luck with Mandrake.

Thats nice & all to try new distros but if U'd done a bit of checking u'd have found that unless u are real hardpressed for Linux, its a recipe for obsoletion. Getting any Linux distro in the next few weeks is not that good an idea. All the Linux out there in the open is either 2.2.xx stable kernels or 2.4.testxx kernels. 2.4 Kernels are very close at hand. So if u havent already paid for Mundrake 7.2 then mightnt be a bad idea to make do with your RedHate 6.2

Also Linux is not as finite as Windoze, in fact quite the contrary. While you have NOTHING to do but buy the new set of bugs when a new version of Windoze is released, the possibilities of making do with what you have are limitless. All you needed to do was to upgrade packages on your RedHate 6.2 .. & the kernel [provided of course u have a good enuff connexn.] Why not make use of the upgradeability and modular nature of Linux.

The AOpen modems are Linux compatible, ie. those that have the RCVDL56ACFW/RCVDL56AF/SP chipsets [FM56-ITU/2, FM56-RS Voice. Driver based on the Lucent Winmodem driver [ltmodem.o].
