OK, what am I missing here. If I run Mandrake on it's own IP directly from the cable modem, I get great internet speed. Now if I hook it up to my Linksys router and either request that it use DHCP, OR assign an IP, internet speeds are like using a 14.4 modem. So what am I missing that I have such a drop in speed?

Same here Hal. I get about 2800k coming directly off the Linux box but only in the 1000k using the router. I am not quite sure why. I have three computers. One with Linux was my cable connection. The other two were IP MASQed through the Linux box. Generally the two clients would get 1000k. Now all three units using the router will get about the same value. I also tested the same machine using Windows 98 and no router. It usually came in somewhere about 1000-1200k. I tested using MSN speedtest. Maybe that is the problem.

Well, gonna have to dumb it down for me a bit there Ex, this is my first real dive into Linux (finally have a dedicated computer to play with). Tell me what you need to know (other than Mandrake 7.2) so that you can tell me how to answer your request.

I'm not using Linux to share my internet connection, I have the Linksys router to do that job. If I run the Linux machine through the router with DHCP, internet on the Linux machine is incredibly slow (the other two connected to the router run fine). If I take the Linux machine off the router and assign it with my second IP address, then it flies along quite nicely (faster than my ME machines).
I would just like to run it through the router (cable modem to router to 3 computers) instead of having to throw a hub in the middle (cable modem to hub, one splitting to Linux machine, one to router, router feeding the other 2 machines). Not really a big deal running with the hub and I get 2 IP's from my ISP (Don't pay extra unless I want 3 or more IP's). |
