I hear all kinds of moans and groans about Linux. Linux won't do this. How do I get Linux to do that?
Well I have a minor Linux success story. My home network has 4 machines, two windows and two Linux. Long ago I was able to configure samba to allow one of my computers (Linux 1) to act as a file and print server for the Windows machines. Samba does great that way. A couple of weeks ago I added the second Linux machine (Linux 2). I had a devil of a time configuring my network first to find the new Linux machine, then getting smbclient to work, then to get samba to work on Linux 2 (had to hand configure because I discovered SWAT doesn't come with RedHat 8.0--later I downloaded and installed SWAT), and finally configuring my printer (hanging on Linux 1) to print jobs from Linux 2. The big problem was with the firewall that was automatically installed with Linux 2. Once I figured out how to work around the firewall (it kept reloading at the highest level when I wanted medium) everything else came to pass. I even was able to find a thread on the net where some other user had the same firewall problem. He wasn't able to solve the problem. I was. In short I am now able to do just about everything I want with all four computers. They are all hiding behind a common firewall, but they are able to talk with each other. I am going to spend the balance of the week examining NFS. Next week I kill RedHat on Linux 2 and install Slackware 9.0. Always wanted to learn Linux the old fashioned way. Just thought I would share a success story. If you have one, why don't you share it too.

Wow, sounds like you are having fun!!
I am doing something a bit like that, with the exception that I am trying to tie a FreeBSD box into the net. by the way, if you are wanting to "learn *nix (yes I know it's not what you said..not exactly anyway!) the old fashion way, I highly recommend FreeBSD! Enjoy and let us know how this all develops!

That's what I like about linux, it requires the user to pay attention. Also it is more rewarding when things do work, it gives a person a sense of accomplishment.
Some of my accomplishment with linux are: Setting up my home network with samba and swat configuring my aureal sound card this one caused my hair to turn gray.updated KDE from 3.0 to 3.1.2 now to get my lexmark z43 printer to cooperate

Took 2 Windows Servers, a NT PDC and a 2000 SQL server and upgraded them to 4 Linux servers and 2 Windows Servers. One is strictly a proxy server running squid and dansguardian, another is a dedicated file server, another is for DNS, and another is a web development machine. Eventually I plan to add one more. I hope to get rid of the Windows PDC but currently I have Exchange and one other Windows app on it. The SQL server also runs a Windows only app, so I am stuck with it.
I have RedHat 8 on two of the machines and Slackware 9 on the two others. Probably will convert all of them over to Redhat. I prefer Slackware but it may be easier for some to follow after me with RedHat. Samba is pretty easy to setup, not sure why you need SWAT. Looking forward to Samba 3. |

I had a problem with linux Red hat 9, I wanted to rip DVDs and create VCDs but the DVD::RIP dependencies was endless, every time I downladed a dependencie for one rpm it asked me for another one and againg and againg, so I was forced to continue using Windows, this was the only reason, I use my pc basically for this porpuse.
Linux also needs a database program like MS Access, graphical and easy to use. |

I hope one day to know what you guys know, that's awesome that you have practically gone with out windows. To this point I surf the net with fedora and burn some iso's and music, can't wait to start networking and getting away from windoze. Unfortunately my future lies in windows and linux, I will have to get my cert's in windows and hopefully linux to start to make a living.
