Using Multiple Network Interfaces

I am having an interesting problem (translates as: I am doing something dumb or missing something obvious). I am using a HP Omnibook laptop running redHat9, SuSE 8.2, and freeBSD 4.8. At work I connect to the internet via my ethernet card and LAN. At home I still use Dial-Up over my PC Card Modem.
The problem is that I cannot get the PPP Dial-Up connection to work. I have it configured using Kppp (on all three OS's). it dials up and shows a connection, but I have no net access with any browser of email app. In Red Hat I can configure the modem under "Networking" and hit "activate" for th4 connection and everything works. In SuSE and FreeBSD I haven't found a simular work around yet.
So here are the questions I would like to pose...
1) How (or what) is kppp doing?
2) How does one get the dial-up to interact with the internet enabled apps on these systems? (browsers and email)?
3) has anyone had a problem like this before?

Thanks
