Cannot use modem in Linux

I have an external USR V.92 modem and Mandrake 9.1 doesn't find it.

As usual, the CD that came with the modem doesn't have drivers for Linux.

What can I do?

Try this:
Find out what serial port you are hooked to (mine is /dev/ttyS0)
Make sure you have no IRQ conflicts
(you can change the IRQ with something like
setserial /dev/ttyS0 irq 7
now try running a terminal type program (I use minicom) and type ATT
you should get
OK
back.
Now just configure ypur dial out script (I use wvdial [make sure you configure it first! ie
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.config
it should detect your modem and all you have to do is fire up vi and put in your phone numbers, log on name, and password.
Be warned, though..the password is stroed as plain text.
You could use a GUI dialer (Kppp or so) but I have had trouble with them so I tend to recommend the command line approch.

Hi there Coyote,

I finally got it working. The problem was that the Wizard was set to autodetect and it detected my external modem, the internal winmodem and the NIC. I left all three of them checked and the message I got was that my modem was not supported.

So, I unchecked everything but the external modem that was found on the port you mentioned above. This time it worked like a charm and here I am, replying from my Linux box.

Thank you!

Big Congrats!
I got a PCMCIA modem working right now, but I am still playing with the internal winmodem. I'm close (I think) but not there yet.

Once upon a time (a few weeks ago) there was no way to get a winmodem to work in Linux. Amazing how fast things change.

Ain't that the truth! The good folks @ linuxmodems.org have done tons of work in this area. The trick is the chipsets being used.
