You can download Mandrake Linux for free and it is legal to use for free. It is based on RedHat and is very simple to use. The LILO boot manager works great and will allow you to multi-boot untill you get more comfortable with Linux.

Tell us about your old computer. How much ram? How fast? etc.

Keep in mind that while Linux doesn't demand much ram, the Linux guis (KDE and Gnome in particular) are just as hungry as Windows. If your old system doesn't have enough ram to run Windows 2000 you probably are not going to like Linux in a graphical mode.

One place is www.linuxiso.org.

When you buy your memory get at least 256 MG total. The 450 PIII should do fine.

RedHat 9, SuSE 8.2 (which you can use without installing it on your PC), FreeBSD 4.8 (stay away from 5 & 5.1 until they are more stable) are all good choices. All are free and the link to linuxiso is the best place I have found to download from.

Good Luck!
