Modem for linux
I have mandrake linux 9.1. I don't have alot of money, and I need a modem. Anyone know of any cheap modems that will work with linux?

External hardware modems should work (about $40), but you can hardly ever get a winmodem to work with Mandrake. I heard there is more of a success rate with Red Hat, though.

Avoid controllerless modems that depend on software to do the work that on-board hardware controllers do. However, there are exceptions and more exceptions all the time.
One good resource is http://www.linmodems.org/ with lots of good info and links. Another good resource is at the web site of the maker of a specific modem that you might be interested in. Many are now providing drivers (open source or closed). I've used Archtek modems before, when I was using a dial-up. They seem to be good quality and again the hardware controller models worked with Linux without a hitch. |
