Question updating KDE on my Linux box

I need help updating KDE on my Linux box.

This is the link where I will be download KDE from..

http://kde.oregonstate.edu/pub/kde/stable/3.1.3/

Basically I need to know if I have to download the complete carpet or is there a certain file that I should be looking for.

I have Linux Mandrake but I would think I could use the one for Red Hat since there doesn’t seem to be a version for Mandrake.

Don't use the redhat one. Redhat has modified the standard kde and it won't work on mandrake. The easiest way to update kde in mandrake is using urpmi. Texstar usually has the updated rpms for mandrake pretty fast. First you have to set up a texstar site as a urpmi source in your rpm database. See this link on how to do that:

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/

Texstar is under external add ons at the bottom.
Once the texstar source is set up, all you have to do is run the following as root to update kde:

# urpmi kdebase-3.1.3

All dependencies and other parts of the new kde will be automatically downloaded and installed in the proper order. Or if you prefer to install directly on your own, here's a link to texstar's mandrake rpms with all the kde 3.1.3 rpms:

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis...rake/9.1/rpms/

Be warned. The installation order can be tricky which is why I always use urpmi instead.

Edit: Just noticed your equipment, 486 with 8MB of ram. If kde will even load on this it's gotta be dog slow. I'd seriously recommend a lighter window manager like icewm or fluxbox.

Texstar only has rpms built for 9.1 unfortunately. Doobie, texstar is a general repositry for mandrake rpms so you dont have to install all of them, just the kde ones and libarts probably. Some people are reporting loosing sound after updating so you might want to hold off on 3.1.3 until it gets straightened out. As far as not using urpmi, I wouldn't advise it; there is an order to those rpms and installing out of order could screw things up.
