Hopefully, you left an empty, unformatted partition for Linux -- or at least some generic FAT/FAT32 partition. Next, insert the RedHat #1 CD into the CD drive and with the CD device set for booting, re-boot your machine. Then just fllow the RedHat installer. Be careful that RedHat installs to the empty partition that you had set up earlier.
You will set up at least two Linux partitions within the empty space -- one for a swap partition and one for the rest of the Linux installation. You can set up more partitions than that, but for your first go 'round, two is good enuff. There will undoubtedly be others with other partitioning schemes, but that's O.K., too. You will be asked what type of filesystem to set up on your non-swap Linux partition. Pick a journaling filesystem. ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, ext3 are all good. ReiserFS is gaining popularity and for good reason. I use ext3 which is older, but good enuff. Just follow the installer, read the prompts, install what you want to install and if you make a mistake, it's not a big deal. The first time I successfully installed Linux, I prbably did another half-dozen installs (freash and otherwise) just to understand better what was going on. Enjoy your Linux experience. |
