The most popular are:
  • Mandrake
  • RedHat
  • SUSE

I don't really consider that system all that old. I run Linux on a Pentium 200/64M RAM system as a local web development server. Unless I perform an extensive SQL query, it runs pretty well.

Do you recommend Suse or Redhat? I have being using Mandrake but I wanted to give something else a try... Not that I have any problems with Mandrake but just for the sake of trying something new...

It all depends. If you want a new desktop environment, either of those works fine. If you want to play around with a server, skip the slick install and go with Slackware or Gentoo.

You can download most versions in an iso format on their websites or try Linuxiso. With an iso image, you can burn a bootable CD.

Now speaking to you from a P12072MB/3.2GB IBM TP365XD laptop. I am running Mandrake 9.1which I installed using the "slick installer" with no problem. I use IceWM as my WM although I did install KDE and Gnome so I could run the apps that I want to run. The key is to find a user interface that works for you and for your hardware. My machine can run KDE or Gnome, but the experience is a little less than satisfactory, which is why I use IceWM.

Is it slow -- of course, but it is stable and does almost anything that I need to do. That which it can't do, I find another way to do.

You will have no problem installing any of the listed distros. Just try them and pick what makes sense for you.

I just installed Mandrake 9.1 with KDE on an old K-6 with only 128 Meg of ram. Wouldn't run KDE. Of course, Mandrake 9.1 installed just fine. Same machine runs RedHat 8.2 with Gnome slow. jglen490 is right use a lighter duty WM and you will be fine. If you want to run from the command line. That works too.
