Software RAID
Who has succesfully implemented Software RAID One with Red Hat 9?
Our specs: SuperMicro P4SPA+ Intel 865G chipset with ICH5, two 80GB Maxtor 7200RPM drives each on an IDE channel as Master. 1GB TwinMOS DDR400, P4-2.4C. We were able to implement it. the problem is when we simulated a drive failure with the Secondary Master (pulled the plug on one of the Maxtor ATA/100 drives (of course while the system was turned off...)). The system worked fine and booted up on the Primary Master. But, wen we put the Secondary Master drive back online, the image wasn't reconstructed and during boot up the message saying the filesystem was in "degraded mode" came up, i.e. mirroring wasn't working on the Secondary Master, i.e. failed RAID 1 implementation. Any ideas as to whether our experiment was done correctly, or suggestions on things we should consider with such a setup when configuring RAID 1. Thanks! |

No one with ideas?
OK does anyone have some general experience with RAID 1 - mirroring? Is RAID 1 supposed to automatically reconstruct an image when a failed drive comes back online or does one have to manually fix the image on the mirror drive and does linux have a way of doing this? |

I don't have an answer to your questions. Sorry. And I only have very limited experiance with RAID 0+1. I do have a question though. How does Software RAID work when the drive with the OS on it fails?

actualli from wat i understand, and believe me, i don't hav half the experience needed to fulli understand the concept, RAID 1 creates an exact copy of everyting on 2 drives (so u need a minimum of 2 drives here), so if one drive breaks down, the other can take over....
that's from my limited understanding. anybody else hav a better answer? thanks! |

If it has two drives, it's hardware RAID right? I thought we're talking about software RAID.

Quote from Familyman:
"If it has two drives, it's hardware RAID right? I thought we're talking about software RAID." ![]() ---------------------------------- well i dont think so... Cause when you say "Hardware" RAID you mean there's an actual RAID controller either on an expansion card stuck into a PCI slot or built-in on the motherboard. The Supermicro P4SPA+ has an ICH5 (I/O Controller Hub) without the RAID functionality, the one capable of "Hardware" RAID is the ICH5R. |
