second problem was the sound card, but fixed that by going into the bios and selected non pplug and play system.

also set printer to normal,

maybe printer should be ecp-ecc or something like that
I'll try the differant settings in the bois and see if thast changes any thing

Most all of the HP printers, especially if they are USB require that ecp-ecc be activated.

right, but this is a old hp- laserjet 4 L, and it does work great
had it running as a shared printer on the lan, but sence I put RH on this one computer, I have not been able to get it to do anything, it does work good on another computer, I have 5 here
went through the set up on RH several times and tried a couple other drivers but no good
it does say that it is the default printer, and that it is active.

I'm at a loss right now

logged in the root, and under printers
I has it listed in the print que, but it does not detect it when I do a scan for it.
it has the correct drivers
the online database has it listed as works perfect.
in devices all the hardware in the computer is shown. but the printer, it is listed under system devices
and is listed as active
but still acts like it is not even connedted
all print jobs stay in the print que

ok
I give up, formated and went back to xp.
I have over the yeard tried every distro form 5.2 to 0.1. and have never gotten any to work right at all, so I think I am going to scrap the whole idea of even trying anymore

learned one lesson, when you create a partition for installing red hat, do not make it a primary partition, as it will not set up the boot loader to chose xp or red hat.

reformat, reinstalled xp

start all over again

when setting up the printer, and then print a test page, it printes it ok, but then keep spitting out blank pages

do I have to put a tick in the areas to send a end of file and all that other stuff, I thought that would be part of the drivers setup.

it was just plain stupidity on my part, not knowing what to doand no instruction. trial and error works
