Samba is a file and printer sharing program that allows you to share files with Windows clients. With it you can have a Linux or BSD fileserver in your network. The new version supports Active Directory so that it can be used in Windows 2000 native mode not just Windows 2000 mixed mode.

It makes for a much better, more secure and less costly way to share files or printers in your network. I have a Samba server at work for sharing files that I moved from a NT server. Users for the most part don't even know they are accessing a Linux server.

Do you think it's worth upgrading to? Are there any new features that the average home user would benefit from? TIA.

Probably none for the average home user. It's big thing is AD support for W2K. Previously if you ran Samba in a W2K domain, you had to run W2K in mixed mode, which basically supports NT Servers snce Samba acted like a NT Server. This new version will allow you to run Samba in native mode which is a big plus for some organizations. That is until MS ships out Longhorn and tries to shut out Samba again.
