Recommend a version of *nix to run on an older machine

I need to build a central event logging server, and I'm thinking that using Syslog will be the way to go.

The machine I will be running it on is a PII 400 w/ 128mb PC100 and an 8GB HDD. It ran WinNT 4.0, but has since been relieved of it duties.

I do like Slackware. It runs well on lesser hardware than some of the others. It's a little harder to setup than RH and MDK because it doesn't hold your hand during the install (text based).

What were you wanting to do with it? If you want to run a KDE or Gnome, you will probably need more RAM but the processor will be okay.

I want to run the syslogd utility on it, which will monitor the even logs on my NT and 2K servers. I'm fine with text base install. Does slackware have a gui interface, or not? Its not a big deal to me, but the people that I will have checking the logs are Windows users, so a gui would be helpful, if even very limited.

I do have a 128mb stick that I can add to the machine. Since I have 1GB RAM in my mandrake box, I had forgotten what gnome and KDE do to RAM.

Vector linux is pretty good on modest hardware as is based on slack. It has several low memory guis that you can selct from after booting, icewm, blckbox, etc. The icewm one is very nice.
