RedHat-Mandrake-800Duron??

Ok it has turned cold and indoor play time. I have a spare case and MSI motherboard and a handfull of spares so Im looking to play with Linux (sometihng about the cold indoor thing).
I see the minumums on several versions -but sometimes we know what minumums mean-so I thought Id complie a short list and see if you think this unit will support the versions I have chosen.
AMD 800 mhz duron (could use a 1.1 I have)
MSI KT133a motherboaard
256 pc133
16 mef tnt (or I have a 32 meg elsa gladdic)
13 meg quantum
looking at the list it looks pretty ugly--but I would like to run either RedHat 9
Or Mandrake 9.1
will she work?? I think both versions are 586's so I know the processor is on the low end...thanks

Hi!

That box should be just fine. I run Mandy 9.0 on a K6-2 350/128meg and a P200 with 128meg. A little slow perhaps, but so am I .

Mandrake will probably be a little faster to boot and be more responsive, at least from the tests I've read. Plus, it tends to be better about hardware support. But, RH tends to be a little more stable, though YMMV.

HTH,
OOPS!

Linux itself will run on a 386(i386), but Mandrake and Redhat are compiled for a Pentium(i586)-~60-233MHz. I run Mandrake 9.0 on a P3-600, the only problem I had was with a relatively new video-card.

BTW, Mandrake/Redhat take at least 1.7GB to install all apps(except servers...), add to that 500mb for a decent swap-partition.
