Asking what is the best OS is like asking what is the best vehicle. It really makes quite a difference what the application will be. The best vehicle for some may be a Ferrari but what if you have to haul freight or kids.

It is the same thing with OS's. There is not one best choice out there. It depends upon the application. If I were to give a computer to an older person, it wouldn't be BSD or a MAC. If I were to build a server, it wouldn't run Windows unless I had applications that depended on it. Again it is application driven as to what OS is the best.

I have to agree with mairving here... I have XP on one machine, then Red Hat on my server... I love 'em both...but each serves it's purpose so I can't say one is better than the other even when deciding between only two.... I still don't see Linux being a viable desktop solution for the average person, but as a server.. its great.. turn it on and forget about it (other than the constant updating that supposedly isn't there like in Windows).

It isnt a documentary, those are his comments, and his thoughts on the thread in question. Please respect his opinion .. and move on.

And my personal thoughts on the subject, would be exactly the same, I cant classify an OS based on no parameters.

I tend to disagree, most any operation system can perform all functions. XP for example can act as a webserver, file server etc.. OS X can do all the same things as can any linux distro, so I think it's a perfectly valid question, which OS is best.

I think Win XP is the best, it’s a stable as Windows 2000 and so easy to use!

Statica please don't get me wrong here but again, it was a simple question of what OS was best for the person using it. Simple as that.

For me, the best WORK OS is Windows 2003 server because it runs the applications that I need for work such as Oracle, Oracle forms, SQL server, Apache and all the other enterprise development tools that I need.

For HOME use, the best OS here would be Windows XP PRO because it's simple enough to get home stuff sorted, whilst also having the capacity to connect to my work computer (Windows 2003 Server)

I'm not a technical fanatic, more into the project management side of things.

The question was what is the best OS. Even if the question was 'what is the best OS for you?', the answer would be the same; it depends upon the application. If the question was asked what OS do you spend the most time, then it would depend on the week and is again application driven.

I have 3 W2k Servers at work. I also have 3 Linux servers and 1 BSD server and an aging NT server that is soon to retire. My personal workstation runs XP Pro, recently upgraded from 2K. Not sure which one I spend the most time on. I spend the most time on the XP machine but a lot of time is spent on it SSH'd into the 'nix machines so how do you figure that. My machine at home also runs XP Pro but I also have a Slack file/web server at home.

There are a few programs that I use that tie me to the Windows platform, namely Homesite and Photoshop that are mostly used for web development.

Basically my preference is like this:
XP Pro for workstations
Slackware Linux or FreeBSD for Servers.

No MS-DOS or Windows 3.1?

I'll assume Windows 2003 should be 2000?(2000 is my pick)

Ditto the mandrake question. Running Mandrake 9.2 which is clean, stable, capable, scalable, featurful, and inexpensive. It cannot be beaten by any measure!!
