removing programs?

I have an old version of GAIM on Mandrake 9.1, it's version 0.59 and 0.73 is out... I want to be able to interface with MSN.

So I downloaded the RPM and everything appeared to be fine- I go to start GAIM- still the old version. I get in the console, which gaim- gives me one gaim, and it is the old versin(in /usr/bin). What should I do to upgrade this software? How do I remove the old gaim?

Where should I look when an install goes wrong?

TIA, L J

Finally found out how to remove programs, but I apparently made a mistake- I had attempted to install the newev\r version of GAIM, and it partially succeded. It was succesfull enough to where I cant run the RPM again, but it was not successfull enough to allow me to run GAIm, nor can I find it (anywhere...) to remove it and try to install it again.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like the software was successfully (?) removed, but the RPM database was not properly updated. What you can do is (as root, always, in a terminal or in Konsole) run:

rpm --rebuilddb

It will run for awhile, but the end result will be a corrected database that matches what you actually have on your system. At that point you should be able to re-install the GAIM 0.73 package.

no luck, tried downloading the newest .74, same result- first time I ran it RPMdrake said already installed...

There is a message that says the package has a bad signature, could this be the cause of the problems?

I have finally given up on the RPM and simply used the source instead- it worked first time. I just need to work on a plugin some tomorrow to get access to MSN via Linux.

What good is Windows?
