Are there any Linux distros that come preconfigured for 32-bit operation,dma-enabled etc?
I know you can do this yourself using hdparm but I was surprised to find my system running at only 16-bit.I realize this is probably the safest settings for installing Linux.Do those pre-installed Linux boxes come with the hdd fully optimized? I've read the man hdparm and a couple how-tos from MUO and O'reilly and the man page says Western Digital caviar drives cant run multiple sector per interrupt mode because of small drive buffers. Anybody ever use hdparm successfully? lynch |

I've used hdparm to set from 16 to 32-bit modes, and to activate DMA settings. It works just fine. However, I haven't tested the other, more dangerous options, like the write ahead, or the multi sector reads, because I DO have important data on my hard drives. :-)

Yeah,Cymbeline. My take on all that is the same: optimize for 32-bit access and enable dma.Leave the rest alone.
Was there a noticeable difference when you did this? lynch |
