I have double booted with Windows XP and varying Linux systems before. Linux boot loaders do a good job of doing the dual boot. Some Linux systems have an additional step to let you decide which system you want to boot to by default, others just automatically make Linux the default boot system. I have had as many as three boot systems on start up but either it was one windows and two Linux or vice-versa.

I have Win XP pro, RedHat 9, SuSE 8.2 and FreeBSD on a single laptop. I recommend GRUB as your boot loader. You just have to remember to do Windows 1st bercause it overwrites the boot sector during the install

If you have a partition tool like Partition Magic, I believe you can set aside a partition for Fat32, or NTFS, then the XP installation will see the partition and ask if you want to create XP to that. However, I don't know if it will be a bootable partition. All my computers had XP on them already when I installed Linux.
