My gawd this thing flies!
I just finished a system (server) for a local bank that uses Linux RH 6.2. This server performs the following tasks: 1. Handles customer to bank E-Mail with auto respond. 2. Serves 16 other "workstations". 3. Provides security for the system as a whole. (firewall+) 4. Creates a full system by system back-up on a weekly basis. 5. Creates an incremental back-up of all systems daily. 6. Handles the bank web page and activities. (still in the works) 7. Hands off to server(2) on a weekly basis and makes a server to server back-up. 8. Server "fail-over" duties. Plus other goodies. The system specs are: Quad Xenon 850 w/2048KB cache ea. AMI Megaraid Enterprise 438 (3 channel U/W) AMI server "roll-over" RAID controller 6 (count `em...6) 44GB U/W LVD SCSI drives in a 1+0 RAID config with fail over. 512MB ECC memory (PC133 equiv) 128MB ram for each RAID controller Battery back-up for each controller DDS3 DAT tape unit with autoloader (22GB per tape, 8 tapes per mag) (i`m drooling!) and what I call a "popper" vid card which is really a dual channel vid-card for high bandwidth based on a "cirrus logic" chipset. 10/100 3Com lan card Asante 20 port 10/100 switch and hub. This puppy flies....I want one! (woody inducer) Cost?...well, at 5500 bucks not bad really (parts) and my end is 1500 for set-up and install. So...$7000....weeee!

Toaster, if you have an extra one of those lying around, let me know. I need to go and wipe the drool off of my chin. I am glad you didn't spoil that server by putting 2000 server on it.

I'd like to see the SETI@home times on that Quad Xenon 850 w/2048Kb cache.

I have the system for burn in until Feb.12 so SETI and a few other apps will be tried. Using a Micky$oft O/S wasn`t even considered. The only candidates as far as O/S was Linux and SCO Unix. SCO was originally considered but later dismissed when the cost of the O/S exceeded $2000 for a 50 station license. Actually, i`m glad we went Linux because the install was painless and fast. I failed to mention the CD-ROM drive...a mild mannored 40x plextor U/W drive.
I am *VERY* pleased with the performance as is the bank manager and sill the system board will support a max of 1.5GHZ CPU`s. This system replaced a dual P-Pro system. |
