Compileing?
Someone told me that compiling a kernel will make Linux run as best it can on your computer, is this true? How do I compile it?

What is told to you is right.Compiling a linux which best fits to your need will work better than other public versions. But it is not easy and requires more than being a home user.

building a kernel specifically for your computer is better, as varhed stated.
The trick is getting it to boot up, google for a tutorial on kernel compiling I went by this for starters. http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/202/1/

compiling apps from source creates binaries that work better with your hardware, gicen of course, that you compile stuff correctly.
there is a Linux distro called Gentoo, in which you have to compile everything from source, check it out: http://www.gentoo.org/ |
